The Gambia Chamber of Commerce & Industry-GCCI 𝕔𝕠𝕞𝕞𝕖𝕟𝕕𝕤 the government’s ongoing engagement with stakeholders in the cement industry and urges continued dialogue to address the sector’s challenges and opportunities.
The 𝗚𝗖𝗖𝗜 continues to highlight the cement industry’s critical role in economic growth and development, particularly in the construction sector, one of the country’s largest employers. The chamber also recognized the industry’s impact on 𝐑𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬, a significant contributor to the Gambian economy.
The 𝗚𝗖𝗖𝗜 noted that the recent tariff increases on cement imports, implemented in response to trade practices by Senegal, have raised concerns about affordability, availability, and potential negative impacts on the construction industry, remittances, and the value of the Dalasi. The 𝗚𝗖𝗖𝗜 stressed the importance of a stable and competitive market to ensure fair prices and prevent supply disruptions.
The 𝗚𝗖𝗖𝗜 called for collaborative dialogue among all stakeholders, including the Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration, and Employment (MOTIE), to find sustainable solutions that benefit consumers and secure optimal revenue for the government. The chamber also emphasized the need to protect consumers by avoiding monopolies of manufacturers and cartels of importers, promoting market efficiency, and ensuring fair prices.
The 𝗚𝗖𝗖𝗜 congratulates the Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration, and Employment (MOTIE) on his recent dialogue with its Senegalese counterpart and reiterates that trade and regional integration are intertwined. Beyond the ECOWAS protocol, The Gambia would benefit greatly from developing the resilience of regional value chains amidst global supply chain disruptions.
The 𝗚𝗖𝗖𝗜 expressed its readiness to support the government and all stakeholders in fostering a vibrant construction industry that contributes to developing businesses of all sizes. By working together, the GCCI believes that a more robust, resilient, and equitable market can be created for the benefit of all consumers.
